before you go … HONG KONG

The World, Rebooted ®
Hong Kong

Hong Kong is recognized as one of the great cities of the world, and rightly so. The setting is gorgeous. The architecture, modern and aggressively upward, is startling during the day and breathtaking at night. Prices are better here than almost anywhere else on everything from watches to electronics to women.

The history is well known. In the 1840s China leased Hong Kong to the British under duress for 150 years. As a result colonial architecture is everywhere in Kowloon (the mainland) and Hong Kong Island, although with the growth this archtecture is becoming more difficult to see. In the late 1990s, the British handed Hong Kong back to the Chinese under a treaty that calls for “one country, two governments” for fifty years. Many fled Hong Kong as the handover approached (most notably to Vancouver, Canada) but, surprisingly, the Chinese government has adhered to the agreement and Hong Kong has continued to boom.

Disney is here with a park, but locals have been hostile and an old park that was about to go under is now thriving. Real estate is about as expensive as anywhere in the world at $2,000+ per square foot for an apartment.

Don’t miss: The Star Ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island, and the Peak Tram, which runs from sea level up 1,800 feet to the peak of Hong Kong Island; and don’t miss Hong Kong at night.
